Challenge
In Chennai, the disused coal unloading facility posed environmental and economic challenges. STIG was tasked with aligning it with environmental concerns and legal requirements while ensuring economic viability.
Contribution
STIG’s approach involved meticulous environmental management to mitigate environmental impacts and sustain port operations. Benchmarking against EMO, Europe’s largest bulk terminal, provided insights and best practices for tailored strategies at the Chennai port.
Category
Within the sprawling expanse of the Chennai port, a once-thriving coal unloading facility now stands idle, rendered obsolete by the pressing environmental concerns it poses. In response to this challenge, STIG was entrusted with the critical task of charting a path forward – one that harmoniously balanced environmental stewardship with economic viability, all within the confines of the prevailing legal framework.
Our approach centered on the development of a meticulously crafted plan rooted in sound environmental management principles. This strategy was designed to not only mitigate the adverse environmental impacts but also ensure that the port could continue to support economically sustainable activities.
To inform our planning and benchmark our proposals, we drew upon the commercial and environmental performance metrics of EMO, a prominent Rotterdam-based entity renowned as Europe’s largest bulk terminal. This benchmarking exercise enabled us to glean valuable insights and best practices from a well-established industry leader, facilitating the formulation of effective strategies tailored to the unique circumstances of the Chennai port.
